It was a chilly February day but the sun was out and the tent-filled market was crowded with shoppers and merchants. There were hundreds of local farmers with their fresh produce spread out on newspapers, crates and plastic tarps carefully displayed to attract customers. The shouts of the merchants yelling out prices and free sample offers were almost drowned out by the cacophonic noises of the banging pots and pans, slams of butchers’ mallets and the firecracker pops of the roasted rice cakes.

The ground was muddy from the rain the night before and the dirt-filled air was thick with smoke from the shopkeepers grilling everything from pig’s heads to dried squid. The smell was an overpowering mixture of raw seafood, fresh garlic and fermented radishes.

As we made our way through the chaotic maze of small makeshift stands, we saw her.

Welcome

my one tooth aunt

Umma’s “We’re Coming Home” Bi Bim Bop (Bi Bim Bap) is loaded with vegetables and roots. It’s good for the body and taste buds.

Umma’s Special Occasion Japh Che (Jap Che) always makes an appearance at the “A” list events.

Umma’s Famous Bul Go Gi and Gooey Fingers Kalbi is always a hit at bbqs and parties.

Umma’s Mul Naeng Myeon (Mul Nang Myun) with the Works is cool, tangy and refreshing. It’s the perfect dish for Oklahoma summers.

The street markets in Korea are the best places to find fresh seafood, produce and meat. You can also enjoy steaming bowls of spicy kimchi jigeh, blood sausages, and other traditional Korean fares. Just pull up a crate and get ready to tantalize your taste buds.

What’s for dinner?
January 11, 2011
2011... Really???
Didn’t you expect to see flying cars by now? Is it really 2011? I remember reading Orwell’s 1984 and thinking how Winston lived in this crazy, unreachable time that only existed in overly creative, bordering on genius minds. Conditions of Oceania haven’t materialized but that didn’t stop Father Time from swooping up huge swaths of days, months and years, leaving me wandering, “Wasn’t it always 2011? No way 1984 ever existed. I’ve been asleep for 7 hours and lost 20 years.”

Anyway, I welcomed 2011 in New Zealand--oysters on the left are NZ’s finest. 2011 is going to be filled with family fun; exciting adventure; grub-worthy food, and a bit of excitement (not sure what kind yet). Watch for new recipes and mouthwatering pics. Cheers to you all!
Happy eating!
