These are excerpts from Good Bye Joe, a book about my family. As I am currently in the market for a publisher, I can only post a paragraph or two. If you’d like to read more, shoot me an email at yobodish@yobodish.com.

I was just getting home from a long day at work and looking forward to spending a quiet evening enjoying a glass of wine while reading “The Curious Incident of a Dog a Night Time” when the phone rang. “Haes is having her baby. She’s in the hospital. I’m leaving for NYC right now,” Haem, my older sister, excitedly announced. It was typical Haem. Rushed comments. Fragmented replies. Immediate click. I immediately called her back before she had a chance to rush out the door. “Hey lunatic. Pick me up on the way?” With that, she and I were

on the New Jersey Turnpike to meet our new nephew.

I was running late, trying to decide what to wear. Do I go casual, saying I’m easygoing and fun or do I do trendy that says I think I’m hip and trying to be young. I settled on casual with a black Calvin Klein safari shirt, Lucky jeans and Michael Kors strappy sandals that gave me an extra three inches.

I didn’t know why I was putting so much effort into this date. I wagered with my friends that it would last an hour... tops. They were out at a local bar in Arlington and I was planning to join them after a quick bite and even quicker exchanges of, “That was fun. I’ll call you.”

chapter 11: not it

Umma’s Set Your Lips on Fire Bi Bim Naeng Myeon (Bi Bim Nang Myun) requires at least  a gallon of water to put out the fire.

Lettuce Wraps for Al is light and healthy with the savory meat accompanied by  cool and crunchy veggies.

Summer Time Shrimp and Bok Choy with Ginger and Soy Sauce has a nice spice to it. It’s topped with cucumbers to help cool the palette.

Ready-for-a-Cook-Off Turkey Chili is a hit at super bowl parties or any event with beer.

My little sister who I had to drag out of bed and comb out the tangles in her hair is now a mom.

On a trip to Mexico, Alex took my 3-year-old nephew kayaking and got stuck in a riptide. I thought my sis was going to jump into the ocean and tug them ashore.

What’s for dinner?
January 11, 2011
2011... Really???
Didn’t you expect to see flying cars by now? Is it really 2011? I remember reading Orwell’s 1984 and thinking how Winston lived in this crazy, unreachable time that only existed in overly creative, bordering on genius minds. Conditions of Oceania haven’t materialized but that didn’t stop Father Time from swooping up huge swaths of days, months and years, leaving me wandering, “Wasn’t it always 2011? No way 1984 ever existed. I’ve been asleep for 7 hours and lost 20 years.”

Anyway, I welcomed 2011 in New Zealand--oysters on the left are NZ’s finest. 2011 is going to be filled with family fun; exciting adventure; grub-worthy food, and a bit of excitement (not sure what kind yet). Watch for new recipes and mouthwatering pics. Cheers to you all!
Happy eating!
